The ink is now dry on BER’s waste water disposal con-tracts
Contracts regulate flow of sewage and rainwater
Berlin’s waterworks Berliner Wasserbetriebe and the airport management company Flughafengesellschaft Berlin-Schoenefeld GmbH (FBS) have now reached an agreement on the disposal of waste water at Berlin Brandenburg Airport. The latest waste water disposal contract, signed in early September, provides for waste water to be piped to the Berliner Wasserbetriebe sewage treatment plant at Wassmannsdorf. The quantity of waste water to be disposed of will increase successively and has been forecast to reach approximately 460,000m³ per year by 2015. A contract has also been signed for the disposal of de-icer con-taminated rainwater at the airport.
“We see the new contracts for Berlin Brandenburg Airport as taking our good working rela-tionship at the Tegel and Tempelhof sites one step further,” explains Jörg Simon, Chairman of Berliner Wasserbetriebe. And Dr. Manfred A. Körtgen, Managing Director Operations/BER of Berlin Airports, emphasises that the airport itself has invested in numerous supply and disposal systems, for example in retention soil filters for the treatment of contaminated rain-water and in pipelines to the Wassmannsdorf sewage treatment plant.
Two companies belonging to the Berlinwasser Group have also made significant contributions to the construction of the new airport as subcontractors working as part of a general contractor package contract awarded in a Europe-wide competition to tender. The engineer-ing company p2m berlin GmbH has been responsible for planning the installation of 50km of water and waste water pipes, of four pump stations and also of pipelines for district heating and cooling. The regional water supply company Berlinwasser Regional GmbH has been responsible during construction for operating the rainwater disposal and purification systems – channels, pressure pipes, pump stations and soil filters.
