The Milestone Hotel in London, part of the Red Carnation Hotel Collection, is sporting a brand-new look that showcases the hotel’s history while updating it with a luxurious feel. Project director Brian Brennan, Beatrice Tollman, president and founder of the Red Carnation Hotel Collection, and Toni Tollman oversaw the renovation. The Milestone is a Grade II listed showpiece of Victorian era architecture. Sir Thomas Jackson Bt., RA originally designed the property as a house for his client, Athelston Riley, in the 1880s at a time when architecture was fascinated with the style of Flemish buildings of the 15th and 16th centuries. The front has a tall shaped gable, blank panels of cut-brick tracery and reliefs of winged putti in terracotta below them. The 19th century interior boasted a library, dining room and a cedar-paneled oratory on the ground floor. The original drawing room, now a bedroom suite, still has a small corner chimneypiece inset with tiles by famous ceramicist William de Morgan. The Tudor suite features a curved and cantilevered music gallery with a low plaster relief of putti by the celebrated sculptor Sir George Frampton, best known for the Edith Cavell monument outside the National Portrait Gallery and the statue of Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens.

With the latest redesign, the Milestone draws on its rich architectural history while incorporated all the refinements of modern luxury. The restyling includes eight individually designed rooms featuring custom carpets, handmade curtains and upholstered walls, each with silk and cotton fabrics selected for each room. The unique rooms boast a wide variety of color schemes, including greens and creams, cool beiges, blues and creams, warm golds and browns, greys and cream and turquoise and browns. The designers purchased art and furniture from auction houses to specifically match each room. Finally, the restyled rooms incorporate the latest modern technology, including low-energy lighting.Overlooking Kensington Palace and Gardens, the Milestone has won numerous awards for its luxury and hospitality, including being voted one of “The Best Hotels 2011” in Travel + Leisure’s 500 and “One of the Best Places in the World to Stay” in the Condé Nast Traveler’s Gold List 2011. In addition to the restyled accommodations, guests can also relax with magnificent cuisine from Cheneston’s, Conservatory or the Stables Bar. The Milestone even provides special picnic menus for dining in Kensington Park.
