Green Hotels: Mandarin Oriental Miami Volunteers in the Everglades

Its sister hotel may be hogging the spotlight in Paris (talk about a wow-worthy debut!), but the Mandarin Oriental Miami has also been making headlines. Recently the staff of the five-star spa took a volunteer trip to Everglades National Park to work in the “Hole-in-the-Donut” Restoration area– a 6,600-acre portion of the park that’s been overrun by exotic, invasive plants. Previously farmland, the area was planted with Brazilian Pepper in order to aerate the soil around tomato plants and green beans. Alas, the Brazilian Pepper samba-ed its way across the land, quickly taking over the habitat and disrupting the natural ecosystem.

Summer Splash Package at the Arizona Grand Resort in Phoenix

The Slide Canyon Tower at the Arizona Grand Resort

A few months ago, when I was visiting Phoenix for the Spring Play Ball and Family Fun media trip, I had dinner at the AAA Four-Diamond Arizona Grand, a kid-friendly resort located in Phoenix.  The Arizona Grand is part hotel, part time-share complex, but the defining feature in my mind is the huge water park the largest private water park in Arizona.  It includes a wave pool, a play area, and an active river, along with the slides, pictured here.

This summer, the Arizona Grand Resort is offering a summer splash package.  Phoenix is hot in the summer but youll be able to cool off at the water park all day long.  The package starts at $169 per night (excluding taxes and fees), and includes a $50 resort credit.  There are some restrictions, but youll be able to use the resort credit at the on-site spa, golf course, and most of the restaurants.

The Arizona Grand offers 740 suites (perfect for families!), that are warmly decorated.  The resort includes three on-site restaurants, a spa, a golf course, and more!  Just six miles from Phoenixs Sky Harbor airport, its very convenient to access.

France – Nice Carnival 2011

What better way to chase away the winter blues than with a colourful and musical carnival.  The annual Nice Carnival takes place this year from Friday, 18 February to Tuesday, 8 March.

For a taste of the atmosphere have a look at this video from 2009:

We’ve noticed quite a few cheap travel deals popping up on the internet.  If you can get away why not bag a bargain trip and jet off to the sunny French Riviera and join in with the fun.

The theme for this year’s Carnival is King of the Mediterranean.  Carnival events include the famous Flower Parade and Parade of Lights and there are guranteed to be hundreds of musicians, dancers and entertainers to keep the energy level buzzing.

According to the official Carnaval de Nice website, tickets can be purchased at the Visitors Bureau at 5 Promenade des Anglais, or at temporary locations along the parade route up to two hours prior to each event.  The celebrations go on day and night so there’s no excuse to be bored.

Nice is close to many other wonderful places to visit along the Cote d’Azur, so you could always take day trips to places like Monaco, Cannes, Antibes or Grasse.  The annual Menton Lemon Festival (Fête du Citron) coincides with Nice Carnival.
